Applications

An instrument that has a weight (the movement is estrained by a spring) will record acceleration, velocity or displacement.

Railroads

Impact recorders are used to register the impact speed of freight cars and to study the effect of impact speeds and damage to lading. In addition, they're used to record vertical acceleration and its relation to rail joints, car spring suspension and the deflection of the car's structural system. These recorders also are used to measure acceleration and compare riding qualities of passenger and freight cars. Such records show the results of inefficient snubbing devices, ineffective draft gears or truck bolsters. They're also used to record excess speed of coupling impacts in railway classification yards and elsewhere.

Missiles

Recorders are available to register the in-transit temperatures, humidities and accelerations that might affect the future performance of missiles. These recorders are also used to measure acceleration in missile nose cones.

Sea

These recorders are used to register impacts and acceleration in the three axes. Such measurements make it possible to design the structural members of ships by recording the effect of wave action on them. These recorders are also used to register shocks in loading and handling of cargo.

Laboratory

These recorders are used to correlate actual damage occurring in transit damage as it's reproduced on the Conbur tester, the vibration table and by drop tests.
